Landscape Lighting for a Country Residence
Lighting Design · Landscape Lighting
Lighting shapes the nighttime architecture of the garden, connecting circulation routes with landscape compositions.
The lighting project for a country residence in Istra, near Moscow, covers a multi-level site with retaining walls, stairways, garden paths and several functional outdoor areas.
The ALLPROJECTS team was tasked with developing a coherent lighting system that would ensure safe movement around the property while revealing the architectural and natural qualities of the landscape after dark.
Particular attention was paid to key views from the house, the definition of private garden areas and the creation of lighting accents on planting.
To develop outdoor lighting that combines safety, functional zoning and an expressive nighttime landscape composition.
The design needed to address the site perimeter, pathways, stairways, changes in level, entrance areas and other potential obstacles.
At the same time, the concept required dedicated lighting for trees, shrubs, retaining walls and architectural features.
The lighting design provided for functional grouping, allowing separate areas to be controlled independently.
How light structures the landscape
Wayfinding and safety
Functional lighting defines the main circulation routes, steps, changes in level and boundaries between outdoor areas. Different types of luminaires were specified for pathways, entrances and technical zones to support safe and comfortable navigation after dark.
Architectural topography
Retaining walls and stairways form an integral part of the landscape lighting composition. Directional lighting reveals the texture of stone surfaces, emphasises the geometry of steps and enhances the multi-level organisation of the site. The interplay between illuminated areas and darker surroundings creates visual depth without relying on uniform floodlighting.
Landscape accents
Dedicated lighting for trees and shrubs highlights the forms of their crowns, branching structures and planting compositions. Lighting accents are positioned with consideration for key viewpoints and the relationship between vegetation and architectural elements.
Lighting concept sketches
These concept visualisations illustrate the lighting intent at the design stage. They are not photographs of the completed project, which may differ in detail.
The ALLPROJECTS team developed the landscape lighting concept, carried out lighting calculations, handled equipment selection and supply, and installed and aimed the luminaires.
The lighting layout was developed in coordination with the site plan, building architecture and the positioning of major landscape elements.
During implementation, particular attention was paid to beam direction, the distribution of lighting accents and the balance between functional and decorative illumination.
Key project tasks
- 01Lighting pathways, steps and changes in level.
- 02Illuminating the site perimeter and entrances.
- 03Revealing the textures of retaining walls.
- 04Creating accents on trees and shrubs.
- 05Organising lighting into functional groups.
- 06Aiming luminaires with consideration for key viewpoints.
The landscape lighting brings functional and decorative requirements together within a coherent nighttime composition.
Lighting defines circulation routes, reveals the geometry of retaining walls and stairways, highlights the textures of natural materials and creates spatial depth throughout the garden.
Directional accents bring out the expressive forms of trees and shrubs while maintaining contrast between illuminated areas and darker surroundings.
The result is a sequence of interconnected outdoor spaces, from the entrance and main pathways to the more private areas of the garden.
